It is worth watching this short 6 minute piece from SA Today Tonight on criminal appeal laws and some other jurisdictional takes on this important issue. The Tasmanian Attorney-General, Dr Vanessa Goodwin, reiterates her interest in seeing something similar introduced in Tasmania. See http://netk.net.au/VideosHome.asp
Delighted to hear today that Eve Ash and I have both been approved as separate presenters (30 mins each plus 10 min questions) in a double session at the biennial Criminal Lawyers Association of the Northern Territory (CLANT) conference to be held in Sanur, Bali, in late June 2015. The theme of the conference is "Curing Injustice" and Eve and I will be covering Miscarriage of Justice issues, including aspects of the Sue Neill-Fraser case here in Tasmania. I will also be discussing developments in relation to the further right to appeal provision and the Henry Keogh decision in SA. Eve has recently been meeting with leading players in the US on Miscarrige of Justice issues.
Attached is my summary of the 96 page decision of the SA Court of Criminal Appeal in the long-running case of Henry Keogh. Henry was recently released from prison after spending almost 20 years in prison. He faces the prospect of a retrial into the matter.
