Off to Sydney to present a keynote speech at the 9th Australasian Council of Women and Policing Conference. See http://www.conferenceco.com.au/acwap/Program.asp. Will also be touching on what I see to be the future challenges for Australasian policing.
The role of the Crown, as the supposed model litigant, comes under fire in this detailed article by Wendy Bacon on the NSW miscarriage of justice involving Roseanne Beckett (Catt). Why is it the Crown vigorously opposed rectifying this injustice over many years when it was evident that police misconduct, at a minimum, was clearly involved? ABC Radio Law Report Program on the Roseanne Beckett Case: an Interview with Investigative Journalist Wendy Bacon
Just finished listening online to the ABC Law Report program on the Roseanne Beckett (Catt) case which included a 15 minute interview with Wendy Bacon, who has followed this case and supported Roseanne for many years. See http://www.abc.net.au/radio/programitem/peGaLJOylD?play=true
I have printed off the 175 page decision of Harrison J of the NSW Supreme Court which was handed down yesterday, Monday 24 August 2015, but I have not yet had the opportunity to read it. Of significant concern is the fact that it took 26 years to get justice and compensation in this matter. It is hoped that the matter can be analysed to determine why it was difficult to determine what had truly occurred in the matter in the first trial, the subsequent appeal and the inquiries and procedures that followed.
It has just been announced that Roseanne Beckett (previously Catt), after a lengthy battle of 26 years (from the time of her arrest for attempting to poison and soliciting to murder her then husband), has received over $2 million and costs for her malicious prosecution action in the NSW Supreme Court. See http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-08-24/roseanne-beckett-judgment-compensation/6719396 and http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/roseanne-beckett-wins-23-million-for-being-wrongfully-jailed-20150824-gj6336.html (which includes a video of Roseanne's reaction outside court).
